Reading about filmmakers and the art of cinema is one of my favorite things. Recently I discovered a terrific writer named Imogen Sara Smith. She just penned an article for The Criterion Collection pondering the possibility that The Red Shoes is actual a film noir. It’s one of the best articles I’ve ever read.

In addition she has written two fantastic books, BUSTER KEATON: The Persistence of Comedy, and her newest release, IN LONELY PLACES: Film Noir Beyond the City.
The Keaton book delves deeply into the underappreciated brilliance of Buster Keaton, while In Lonely Places explores the meaning and impact of setting in film noir. Both get my highest recommendation.
If that isn’t enough for you, there is also an episode of The Cinephiliacs where Ms. Smith discusses both of these books, her influences, and approach to writing.
